New Look SST Board
A big welcome to SST Members Tyrone Cassius, Pippa Inwood and Nic Perrem who have been co-opted* onto the SST Board of Directors. They join Dr Christopher Holland (Chair), Keith Waldon (Vice Chair), Thomas Hames and Jenie Owens.
We caught up with the newest recruits to find out what their hopes are for their new roles and also wanted to hear what advice they might have for our final year students and newly qualified Graduates.
Pippa is the most recent recruit to the Board. Using her experience from working in various areas including private multi-disciplinary clinics, self-employed status and working in elite sports, she hopes to ‘to provide a current view of the sports therapy industry and trends, to move The SST forward as a professional body’.
Pippa is undertaking a Masters degree in Football Science & Rehabilitation and whether you are a student or a graduate, she feels you are never finished learning. Pippa said: ‘Take any spare time to learn new skills or increase knowledge. Every day is a learning day. If you don’t know where to start, have a look at what job specifications are out there and see what employers are looking for.’
Nic too hopes to draw on his varied experience working in private practice, amateur, university and professional sport, education, and importantly the NHS. Nick is looking to ‘provide strategic leadership for the Society in its drive to gain greater recognition of the profession’.
Leaving university and starting out can be daunting at the best of times. Nic has some sound advice. He said:
‘Seek out a great clinical mentor, and where possible surround yourself with people who also want to keep learning / developing. It can be really hard when you first graduate as you are now qualified, insured and able to act as an autonomous practitioner. It’s also really common to feel confused, anxious, and uncertain about seeing patients for the first time on your own. Remember, it’s fine if you don’t know everything about every condition that you see, no one does. The key thing is that you act safely, be honest with your patient, and take time to immerse yourself in learning about all the new conditions you will see.’
Many of you will know Tyrone from his work on inclusion, diversity and equity; three areas extremely important to The SST and its members. Tyrone is the current Chair of IDEAs (formerly NEEDSs). He also runs his own private clinic and is Head Sports Therapist for the England 6 aside football team.
Many members are reticent to talk about their skills but Tyrone wants graduates to be proud of their knowledge. His message to members of The SST: ‘Be comfortable talking to people about your skills and what you do, because you never know what opportunities it could lead to.’
Finally, we asked each director if granted a wish to change one thing on the Sport and Exercise Therapy landscape to benefit SST members – what would it be?
Pippa: ‘A world that doesn’t isolate different therapy professions. A wish for all to work under one umbrella with a range of different skills and knowledge regardless of their qualification. To provide the best care programme and multidisciplinary approach in supporting individuals.’
Nic: ‘I’m a strong advocate for the need for statutory regulation of the profession. I believe this is essential for the protection of the public. However, my wish would be that even without regulation in place, employers and other key organisations such as sport’s governing bodies should be fully assured that any members of the Society possess the skills required to work in MSK healthcare, and other sports medicine roles at the highest levels. I hope that the focused effort of the Board and the Society’s staff will ensure that this wish is achieved in the near future. ‘
Tyrone: ‘If I could change one thing about Sport & Exercise Therapy it would be to get better recognition, acknowledgement and financial reward for the work we do and the value we add to the industry.’
It looks like everyone is definitely on the same page. We wish them all the very best in their endeavours to take The SST forward.
*NB: The SST’s Articles of Association allow the Board to select members should vacancies occur during or after the annual AGM.
All three co-opted directors will be required to stand for election at the 2025 AGM (alongside any other Members who wish to stand). The date for the AGM is now confirmed as Wednesday 10th December.
