Background
Our application for the Statutory Regulation of Sports Therapists has been approved by the Health and Care Professions Council, (HCPC*) on three separate occasions without completion of the necessary legislative process.
The Society has previously chosen not to be regulated under the Professional Standards Authority, Accredited Register programme as we firmly believe that in order to protect the public, Sports Therapists must be statutorily regulated.

Following our membership survey in 2024, we were delighted to announce overwhelming support for Statutory Regulation. Statutory Regulation will establish a legally protected title, fostering public trust and ensuring standards of safety within the profession. It also promises to open new avenues for SST members, enhancing career progression in both the private and public sectors.
With a strong mandate from our members, we continue to strive for Statutory Regulation whilst accepting that the process is a marathon and not a sprint. For example, our recent campaign encouraging members to write to their local MPs was just one of many activities necessary to build our case and profile with the right influencers.
The Board of Directors, the Industry and Recognition Pathways Task Team, CEO and colleagues are all committed to advancing this agenda, and we are working with expert partners to support our aims. We’re ‘getting on with it’ behind the scenes, conscious that members will have heard much of our previous attempts. However, we will endeavour to update our members as and when we have more tangible actions, campaigns, and news to share.
