Bruce Hobbs Travelling Scholarships

The first Society of Sports Therapists Travelling Scholarship was awarded in 1996 to David Jones who visited the pioneering ACL Knee Surgeon Mr Donald Shelbourne. In 2010 the scholarship was renamed  The Society of Sports Therapists Bruce Hobbs Annual Travelling Scholarship in memory of Bruce Hobbs who passed away in March 2010 at the age of 40, following a 5 year battle with Motor Neurone Disease.  Bruce, a highly committed Member of The Society of Sports Therapists, was a Graduate from the first Degree programme, run in collaboration with The Society of Sports Therapists at the University of North London (now London Metropolitan University).

Bruce was a proactive Member of the Society and an inspiration to many of his friends and colleagues. He was a keen and active sportsman and he had played football semi-professionally and worked as a Therapist in professional football with Luton Town FC. At the time of his diagnosis, Bruce was a Senior Lecturer in Sports Therapy at the University of Hertfordshire. It is hoped through naming the Scholarship after Bruce that his legacy will live on.

In 2017 and 2018, two new Travelling Scholarships to Virginia Commonwealth University Sports Injury Prevention Centre and Duke University Sports Medicine Clinic respectively, were added to the programme .
